That said, I occasionally have the need to do some work in Hebrew, which presents some problems. in a way, it's home.Even though I live in Israel, my computer operating system runs using English, and almost all the work I do is in English. It's more the people that keep my around than anything else. We even have a color laser printer now! gasp!īut seriously, I wouldn't have stayed if I didn't enjoy the work. When I started working here they were still using one of those old 90s macs - the colored ones with the handle on top? Yeah, one of THOSE (it was blue) - poor thing was on it's last legs. But what job doesn't? The fact that I've become the go-to IT person (simply because I'm literally the only person on staff under 40) is a tad annoying, but I keep joking I'm slowly dragging the shul, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. My BA is in Creative Writing (and I've taken plenty of art classes, even computer art classes, over the years), it's nice to be able to flex those creative muscles all the time. It's surprising how many flyers and poster need to be designed and have graphics for, and how much writing needs to be done. One thing in particular about my job is I get to be creative. So-and-So now it's Gary, and Lisa (fake names, but you get the idea). These are people I've known since before I could talk! It was always Mr. It was downright weird to have to start calling people by their first names though. The only new person is the rabbi! And he's been here for over 10 years now. It's where I grew up, it's the people I know, hell the school director is still the same as in the 90s! The office manager, cantor/hazzan, Sisterhood president, and even Board president, are all people who I've known since I was small. I think I enjoy it so much because it's my community. So, yes, it's not the greatest paying job, but I enjoy the work (most of the time - but every office job has it's downsides - aka I'm IT!), and I love my community, and even though I'm not the most religious person, I enjoy it. I quite enjoy it! And the two jobs together let me pay my own bills. Though, you're right, it's not very well paying (though it's certainly above the US minimum wage!), and it's only 20 hours a week.īUT my husband has a great paying job as an engineer, and I have a second job working for an indie yarn dyer (I knit and do plenty of other yarn-related things), and that job lets me travel, and work shows, and learn all about the dyeing process, etc. I went to their religious school, had my Bat Mitzvah, and even took classes all the way until the end of HS here. It's the temple I grew up at, and that I've been a member at for 99% of my life. I can write almost as well with my right as my left (I'm basically ambi) but only in English! But I can do cursive and print in English with my right. ![]() Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you.
